A mental model is someone's thought how about how a particular something is going to work. A user's mental model is how they perceive the, in this case, website to function before they even use it. They sort of imagine how the process is going to unfold. For the YouTube design you definitely had to take the user's mental model into consideration when initially designing and redesigning. We are making the product or alteration to make it easier on the user. For my YouTube design it was all about simplicity, so for the changes I wanted to implement drop down row interfaces and hovering over an arrow to get videos to move left and right (for sifting through). I felt these fit the mold of a user's metal model. This idea may conflict with a programmers mental model if it were to ever be implemented, because he may want to add different navigational features/interfaces.
