Stumbleupon is a website that allows users to choose certain areas of interest (such as technology, sports, dating advice, meditation, entrepreneurship, and more) and then view random webpages ("stumbling") in these areas of interest.
I believe that the motivation behind creating Stumbleupon was to introduce users to new content around the web and inspire users to explore the Internet by having new content shown on your screen with just a click. When people start to use websites for a while (such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit), things become pretty redundant. Users go through their same routine and then, only when they're bored enough, they log off or do something else. Stumbleupon gives a very interesting experience to its users by showing each user a random page based on whatever they specify they're interested in.
The creators of Stumbleupon made the action as easy as possible, a simply button click. The big orange Stumble button on the top navigation bar on the page makes it extremely clear that you should click that button. This way, users can become masters (to some extent) of the website in little time, and can easily enjoy it.
