A mental model is sort of like putting a transparency screen over a complicated system so that the user doesn't have to look at the skeleton of an application. It makes the complicated issues vanish, and it allows the user enough visibility to use something without having to read a manual about it and become an expert. For project three, we were supposed to have designed YouTube with this kind of mental model goal. We had to make a feature easy to use at first glance so that the user would instantly know what to do. They would understand the program even if they didn't understand the code happening behind it.
An implementation model is unlike the mental model because it is not user-centered. It is not about making something easy to use; it is about making an application that is supposed to do what it needs to do without any costumes or make-up on it to make it pretty. Instead of tailoring to the mass majority of the people using it like the mental model, this implementation model is for the very knowledgeable guys who have a background in understanding the skeletal system behind the application.
