YouTube was the first big video website on the internet. I can imagine that the developers of the site could never find easy access to the videos they wanted to see, so they saw an opportunity to create a website of searchable videos that people could easily discover. They used obvious design to create a simple way of providing access to the things that the internet community really wanted to see at the time, and it simply took off from there. They likely continued with that mindset when they implemented their other obvious design features, such as the popular and recommended video sections.
I doubt YouTube happened by accident. It seems like a very well thought out website that presents a clear goal to its users, which is the provision of easy access to the videos they want to see.
