This is a familiar sight, Wikipedia. In my last post I wrote about what made the site appealing to us the users. The natural instinct of curiosity within humanity, and cats? Anyway, all that search bar in your grill coerces you to throw some words you want to know about in there and get slammed with some knowledge, courtesy: Wikipedia. This all accomplishes what they want you to do, but the real question to why is this magical tome of knowledge so damn good?
I would like to think that the people designing this website wanted to share their love of learning with the rest of the world and there is no better way to do that then through this magical land of tubes: The Internet! But I think that good design happens by accident. In the video the speaker made it sound like Apple accidentally made something awesome, mainly because they weren't user oriented in the design process (Designing the Obvious ch.2). So I'd say Wikipedia is so good because it focuses on the activity of learning (Designing the Obvious ch.2), and understanding versus trying to get people to want to learn and understand.
